Assistant School Business Manager

24 hours per week, initially / 39 weeks per year

Fixed term in the first instance until 31 August 2026 when it will be reviewed.

£18.50 per hour

 

A unique opportunity has arisen for an Assistant School Business Manager to join our consultant team.  JEM Business Consulting Ltd provide an ad hoc service to schools across Cambridgeshire, filling gaps for absence or whilst recruitment is ongoing or on a long-term SLA basis.  The role is school based but may be at different schools as well as some remote home-based work as well at times.  All equipment is provided. 

 

Working hours                   

8.00 am – 4.30 pm (this includes 0.5 hour for lunch which is unpaid)

3 days per week between Monday – Friday – 24 hours

 

The Assistant School Business Manager plays a vital role in supporting the School Business Manager to ensure that the schools that JEM Business Consulting is supporting meets their educational and operational objectives. This professional position provides strategic and administrative support to the leadership team, working collaboratively with teaching and support staff to enhance school effectiveness and raise standards of achievement. The role promotes a strong business ethos and ensures optimal use of resources across key operational areas including finance, administration, HR, ICT, facilities, and health & safety, ensuring compliance with all statutory expectations.

 

Duties: (further details in the attached application pack)

 

  • Implement financial procedures, monitor budgets, report variances, ensure compliance, and support funding opportunities.

  • Lead admin staff, conduct reviews, run meetings, and support strategic planning with the School Business Manager.

  • Manage site maintenance, inspections, and ensure a safe, secure environment aligned with statutory compliance

  • Oversee admin operations, improve systems, ensure efficiency, and coordinate statutory reporting.

  • Enforce health & safety procedures, maintain records, monitor risks, and support departmental compliance.

  • Assist with ICT contingency planning and support operational continuity.

  • Support recruitment, maintain HR records, and ensure Single Central Record compliance.

 

The successful applicant will:

 

  • Have experience of working in a school

  • Have experience of working as an Assistant School Business Manager or similar school-based role. 

  • Have experience of working in a busy primary school office.

  • An excellent Team Player with the ability to use their own initiative.

  • Able to work efficiently in a lone working role

  • Have sound experience of the administration and management of a school office.

  • Have sound experience of statutory premises and health and safety requirements in school.

  • Have experience of operating Management information Systems (MIS) such as, Sims/Arbor/Scholarpack etc

  • Have experience of operating finance accounting packages such as, FMS/Sage/PS Financial/Bromcom/Arbor Finance

  • Have a good understanding of the expectations of the Cambridgeshire Corporate Team

  • Have a good understanding of educational issues and how they impact on a school.

  • Can demonstrate good communication skills and have high standards, with a keen eye for detail.

  • They should be reliable and practical with a can-do attitude.

  • Professional, with a positive, caring and sensitive attitude

  • GDPR aware.

 

The applicant will have:

 

  • GCSE English and Maths, level A-C

  • CSBM or equivalent, desirable.
